Shift Cam Position

in 1974 Yamaha DT360A

Hi there! One more step in assembling my motor….

Now I‘m on a point where I forgot during disassambling how the fixing crown from the shift cam was situated over the pins, see fotos. How can I find the correct position? In the actual position there are not all 5 gears available…. Any ideas? Thx!

I found the right position. In NEUTRAL the closed part of the crown should have the position as shown in the picture (red arrow).

thx for the answer! I took the foto during disassambling when I devided the housing parts. Now the shift cam is in the correct position but in one position it stops because of the part in the foto >> red arrow. My thought was that I have to turn the crown.... I try to take a actual picture today in the afternoon.

Ok . . . now I think I understand the problem much better.

I'm surprised that the service manual does not show or say anything about this installation.

If you remove the crown, can you see any mark or footprint on the end of the cam . . . where it used to be positioned?

If you can't see an outline of where the crown use to sit, then you will have to keep moving the crown to the next pin position until you find the one that works for all of the gear changes.

Make sure you are rotating the gear shafts (back and forth) by turning the clutch, or sprocket shaft, while changing gears. This will help the gears engage smoother.

I don't think it should matter what position you choose to install the pin retainer / fixing crown.

If it does, there are only 6 pins to try . . .

I also noticed in your picture, that it doesn't look like the shift drum / cam ... is protruding through the case far enough for the shifter arm to fit into the second row of pins. Please study pictures below:
